EMPORIA, Kan. — Thinking back to that wild windstorm in late December, it’s hard to forget how quickly things unraveled in Emporia. On Sunday the 28th, gusts reached 40 or 50 mph, sometimes even higher. The damage happened fast, tree limbs everywhere, snapped power lines, and whole neighborhoods plunged into darkness.
The city’s power grid just couldn’t handle it, and people are still talking about it as we push through the middle of winter. During the worst of it, utility poles actually bent under the strain. Branches crashed down onto the lines, so block after block lost power for hours.
It was a reality check: You don’t need some once-in-a-century disaster for things to fall apart. Regular winter winds can knock out power and fry transformers. For a lot of people, this storm highlighted just how vulnerable our homes are to power surges and all the strange voltage swings that come with bad weather. That’s why EMP Shield really matters.
